Many decades ago, these birds were introduced to the Caribbean. The male rooster with its red comb and wattle also sports a resplendently plumaged tail. He dominates the smaller, brownish hens within his territory . These birds are now largely feral and can be seen and heard throughout the Virgin Islands. On a late afternoon stroll, I encountered this family on one of the west end mountain paths.
