CLAPPER RAIL aka Mangrove Hen, Dumb Bird
This Rail is a medium sized chicken-like marsh bird, about 13” with warm eyes, peach colored breast, and a wide black tail. It has strong legs, rounded wings, a short tail and a compact body, a grey back with black spots; and lower down the spots are white. Their nests are built of twigs in mangrove roots and they lay several pale spotted eggs. The chicks are black.
The Mangrove Hen eats insects and its voice is a low deep clucking sound like ‘Ca-ca-ca’ leading to another local name of Morning Ca-ca bird. The voice has also been described as a harsh hollow-sounding chatter.
