LITTLE BLUE HERON

Florida cerulea

aka Gaulin locally, or Pond Shakee.

This heron is about two feet high, and a common resident of the Virgin Islands. It is white when young but develops a chestnut head and neck with a dark grayish blue body, greenish or greens-yellow legs and feet. The bill is blue-grey with a dark tip. It is often seen wading around the shore of small islets, as shown here at Sandy Spit near Jost van Dyke, where it catches crayfish, frogs and insects.

The Little Blue makes its nest of sticks in trees over shallow water, and lays four or five eggs of a pale greeny-blue.  Its voice is a a loud deep croaking.
