Party at Government House, 1923

Limited Edition Giclee Print By Jill Tattersall 12" x 8"

This painting shows the old Government House, built in 1899, which was one of many buildings destroyed in the 1924 hurricane. Access to Mount Olympus, as the impressive building was known, was usually by sea to the Government House dock and then up the flight of steps that still exists. The drive ran down farther to the right to meet the track that led from Road Town to Fort Burt, where the road ended. At sunset the flag was ceremoniously lowered by the two Road Town policemen in their smart dress uniforms. Governor and Mrs. Harwick were in the house in 1924 and her evocative diary of that time can be seen in the present day museum room, which used to be the pantry.
